Professional Bio
A 1991 graduate of St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, Michael Rozell holds a BA in Music Education with a concentration in piano and voice. He did his graduate work in conducting at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, studying under the renowned composer/conductor, Jack Stamp.
In the fall of 1991, Michael joined the faculty at the Belle Vernon Area School District where he taught vocal music and theater arts. Over the years, Michael taught thousands of students in every building in the district. Through the course of his career, he held several leadership roles including the Department Head of the Fine and Applied Arts Department, an officer in the Belle Vernon Area Education Association/PSEA, and the President of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, District 1, representing nearly 1000 music teachers in the five southwestern PA region.
Michael was the recipient of numerous awards, some of which include the Rotary International Community Member of the Year award (Belle Vernon-2004), the Rotary International Teacher of the year award (Belle Vernon-2023), and the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Citation of Excellence, an award given to only twelve music educators in the state of PA (2021).
In June of 2023, Michael retired, ending his 32 year career in education. However, he went through the shortest retirement ever, as he began a new career in September 2023, as the Executive Director of the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra. In this position, Michael is responsible for the day to day operations of the WSO. He has taken on the responsibility of promoting the WSO, handling everything from scheduling concerts to pursuing grant funding and compensating musicians. His efforts are directed towards making the WSO more accessible to a new generation of concert-goers.
